What Is Nyuh Gading? Picking Bali’s Yellow Coconut in Nusa Penida

If you spend enough time in Bali, you may notice coconuts that look a little different from the usual green ones. Bright yellow to golden orange, these coconuts are locally known as Nyuh Gading.

Here in Nusa Penida, Nyuh Gading grows naturally in the tropical landscape surrounding Mahaloka Valley, near Crystal Bay. On this particular afternoon, we decided to pick one straight from the tree.

There is something special about enjoying a coconut only minutes after it has been harvested.

After choosing a ripe yellow coconut, it was carefully picked from the tree before the thick outer husk was trimmed away by hand.

Once opened, the reward was fresh coconut water and soft coconut flesh — simple, refreshing, and completely natural.
For us, moments like this are part of everyday island life.

Nyuh Gading is more than just a beautiful tropical fruit. Coconuts have long been part of daily life and Balinese culture, used for food, drinks, offerings, and many other purposes.

For visitors, seeing one picked directly from the tree offers a small glimpse into a slower and more natural side of Nusa Penida — beyond beaches and sightseeing.

At Mahaloka Valley, surrounded by tropical greenery and only a short walk from Crystal Bay, sometimes the simplest experiences become the ones you remember most.

And sometimes, it starts with picking a yellow coconut from the tree.
